Education

Oxford County is a growing region in Southwestern Ontario with a population of approximately 140,000. Its educational landscape is characterized by a strong emphasis on college and trades, reflecting its robust manufacturing and agricultural base.  With a strong movement in recent years to STEM educational streams the County is poised for an increase in education base and an increase in revenue overall.

  • Trades & Apprenticeship: Approximately 9% of the population holds a trades certificate (including both apprenticeship and non-apprenticeship). This is higher than the national average in several sub-categories.
  • Community College: About 32% have a college or other non-university certificate.
  • University: Roughly 17% hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. This is lower than the Ontario provincial average of about 37%, indicating a workforce more focused on technical and applied skills.

Oxford County generally has a lower cost of living but also lower average salaries compared to the major urban tech and financial hubs in southern Ontario. As there is a comparatively low amount of students pursuing a STEM University education in Oxford county, this needs to be addressed through outreach programs. Currently there are free STEM outreach programs which can catalyze young minds to set them on a path to pursue higher education through STEM degrees for our children’s benefit and the benefit of Oxford County. With educated constituents within Oxford county, we can increase our industrial base and therefore increase the standard of living for constiuents and additionally increase the tax base for the county.
